The Last Minute

It's never too late
for two souls drifting,
walking away.

To defy raw fate,
to change everything.

To take
the blackest sorrow
of tears and pain
and raw memories.

To bend and fashion
golden menageries--
a raving nightmare,
to a luminous dream.

It's never too late
for our lips to say:
"I'm sorry."
"I want this."
"I love you."
"You should stay."

Even in the cold night
of our last minute
at the end of eternity,
to trade this nothing
for everything to be
if only
one of us would say:

"I'm sorry."

"I want this."

"I love you."

"You should stay."

To take
the last minute
and keep it...
until we walk away.

Sometimes the last moment is best kept hanging in the air, flash frozen, without the fairytale "what ifs"....
undone, unfinished...
what could be more disappointing than to find we did all the "sorry's and maybe's" and still ended up here...hanging on....
when instead we could believe
it would have
if only.....

Sometimes, it might just be best to walk away. Sure, there will be haunting thoughts and memories. But those tantilizing "what ifs" make for the occasional spicy dream.

But sometimes, you just want to try one more time.

Once more
before the end
slams shut
and the silence reigns
for the rest of all time.

Peace out, Singleton.

Esp. when you know there's still love on both sides.. those words can heal a lot..,

I think sometimes we let go too easily- esp in this age, that tho we hurt and want to hold on, we just say things cant work out. They can, it really is upto us.

This I truly believe . I try to emulate this , but like the comments above sometimes just doesn't happen- the effort however is there..

Oh I love this and know it so well. I've done the walking away and I've been the one to say Wait! I'm sorry. Sometimes things just slip out of our hands and are gone because we didn't take the time or the chance to stop.

So many lost people - makes my heart cry at times.

Peace today.

Beautiful and so true. This is why I always try to say what I'm thinking, what I mean. It's just better that way.

How we'd love this to be true.

these words -

this must be the poem promised to me.

you give me hope. i dont know if it is false.

you know my circumstance, my searching, my disbelief, my anguish.

i hope.

sometimes, it's all one has left.

Forgiveness changes us doesn't it? It forces us to understand another person, taken in their point of view, it can transform us. It takes stregnth as well, the stregnth to go on despite the fear that you may be hurt. Gosh, you really write fast!

Wow. This touches me so deeply. I was feeling these exact sentiments recently and you've pulled them from my heart and mind and layed them here on the page so beautifully.

Princess Pointful said...

So very true.

I once found a letter that said these words... though it really was too late by then. I wish I had this poem on hand to provide as a handout then!

someone once said that if it weren't for the last minute nothing would ever get done. i guess that includes apologies and reconciliations. sometimes.

Mystic Rose

Thanks for the visit. We often throw it all away before it's time.

Glad you agree; things are only over when someone wants to try no longer. Or both.

Peace and love...

Lets not lose any more--lets keep the love where it belongs, in reach of our heart.

Karma Lennon

Glad to see you! Sorry to see your blogs taken down. Your friends are going to miss you much.

Thanks for the input, and I hope you keep coming by.

Let it be so... but it does take two to make things owrk, no matter how much one tries.

Sometimes it does work, and other times it does not work out. It's only as true as we make it to be.

peace out, and write on.

Ultra Toast

Thanks for the emphatic vote of confidence.

I slaved over exact wording quite a bit on this one, more so than usual. Glad it paid off.

Been there, done that, eh? But in the end, things worked out for you rather well, it seems. It sometimes pays to try, to put forth the effort.

Not always, but enough that it's worth a try.

This one was for you, I had you and your recent story, as well as my own sad black and white pictures in mind when I wrote it.

This one may not be the one I owe you, but you helped inspire it. And I hope your man comes to his senses. If he does not, then he is senseless, no?

Peace and love, friend.

I picked up the pace, lately, yes. I should post every freaking day, or atl east try. No excuse not to.

Forgiveness is something that makes us remember that the counterparts in our lives are also human, and perhaps feel as bad or worse than we do.

Thanks for your comment. Glad to see you, as always.

And yes, I know you are reading silently. Glad for that I am.

Thank you so much for the affirmation. I try to put myslef into other people's shoes, and I think I'm getting better at doing it.

And I hope all is well for you, and you don't need to use these words to often.

Peace, friend. You rock.

Princess Pointful

If ever the need arises, copy it, print it, and send it to them--your very own form response.

And yes, it is sometimes too late. They waited 'til after the last minute, didn't they?

Peace out and the post tonight was a good one.

eric1313 said...

You said it. The last minute is very familiar territory to me.

Sometimes, the last minute is the one that is needed. Before everything is spent, we should look for a way to mend the breaks in our relations with others. If we wait to long, as Princess indicated, it may become too late.

And then look what we miss out on.

Thanks for the words, all. Peace.

Man if not sleeping caused you to write this, never sleep again this is friggen awesome! Of all the times I walked away not thinking that there may not be an easy way to return and change my mind. Awesome!

Princess Pointful said...

They did wait until past the last minute, indeed.
And after many warnings that the last minute was coming, and instructions on how they could stop time.

pocketful full of hope...should never be turned inside out..

Well, thank you, sir. I the truth is what anyone wants. Glad to here it from all vorners of the world.

Scottland is lucky to have you.

Ha, thanks. This one was at that beginning of my tired sohourn through a long night.

It seems that when we get tired, the walls vome down, and you can get to the core of a matter a lot easier. Like the way kids sometimes have that simpler and yet just as true view of the world.

eric1313 said...

I figured so. Well, as I said before, you learned a lot from the experience. And at least you moved on with that knowledge.

You might have even taught them a lesson about paying attention to feelings other than there own, and taking others seriously--in which case, you did a service to whatever women they would later meet.

That's a wonderful, susinct expression--as well as the heart of it.

Thanks for your visits, everyone.

beautiful poem, as always eric.
But sometimes words like 'I'm sorry' are just words and sometimes they become like a broken record & sometimes that means that it is too late...
sometimes when the security & trust & integrity leave nothing behind but forgiveness & peace...we must walk away.

eric1313 said...

Right you are.

When it's over, it's over. We just shouldn't walk away from soething unless we've tried.

I didn't want to sound all mooshy about this one--I'm afraid I failed at that! But it is a beautiful sentiment, though a tad sentimental.

And I love the title. I actually worked it from the title, which isn't a good way top write, but hey, it's good to check things out from all the angles that we can, right?

The last line gave me shivers. In a good way.

High praise coming from you. Your writing does the same for me and many others.

Thank you.
